IN GENERAL
Adjusting to a new culture, foreign language, new foods and traditions are sometimes nerve-wracking and also exciting. During the stages of adjustment, experiencing culture shock that has so much to encounter can be devastating. New people and differences may be irritating or frustrating for some students while most of the students would look forward to these changes. However homesick can be common to all for sometime.
You will have to do you laundry, cook your food and keep your studies on track probably while working part-time as well. It is all about facing all that with interest; have friends, do chores at rosters and do collective work such as cooking and cleaning.
Learning to have friends, discovering student life abroad with cultures and traditions, opportunities will make you eventually feel comfortable that you will not want to return home 🙂
MAKE IT WORK IF YOU FEEL LOST AT THE BEGINNING
Participate in orientation meetings
Universities/Collages will arrange orientation meeting a few days before the semester begins. This is a great way to meet your fellow students and to get an introduction to your university. Make sure you participate in the social life around you. It is also highly recommended to join sports clubs or other unions that interest you.
Socialize
Just like having the interest to become friends with local students, you need to befriend international students too as they understand you better. International students also make interest in establishing new social circles of friends while local students have their social network with studies, work, family and friends already. Your attention on socializing all makes things easier and interesting.
Keeping in touch with family, friends are important just the way you prioritize making your social life in the new country.
Create a blog
Sharing your experience with friends is very important. Create a blog at http://www.offexploring.com / Kilroy etc. to get started with. You can also find blogs from other students abroad and many more..
